American Idol Hopefuls Swarm AT&T Park

Thousands of people are expected AT&T Park in San Francisco Thursday, where auditions for the next season of American Idol are being held.

Tuesday was the first day contestants could register for auditions and an estimated 7,000 people lined up. They will now sing for a group of preliminary judges.

One of the hopefuls is Carmina Salcido of Sonoma. She is the lone surviving daughter of Ramon Salcido, who killed the rest of his family, along with several winery workers, in the late 1980s. He remains on death row. Salcido says she intends to sing Shubert's Ave Maria.

Twenty-year-old Christy Orkes of Millbrae says she has been visualizing her performance in her mind.

Orkes says she doesn't want to get her hopes up too high to avoid being devastated if she's not selected.

American Idol Supervising Producer Patrick Lynn says contestants over the last couple of years are more aware of the process of getting selected.
