22 Soldiers Injured In Tent Structure Collapse At Fort Hunter Liggett

MONTEREY COUNTY (CBS SF) -- All 22 soldiers that were hospitalized or injured after a tent collapsed at Fort Hunter Liggett in Monterey County on Wednesday night have been released and sent back to their unit, U.S. Army officials said.

At about 9:30 p.m., an Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was landing and created some wind, which Army officials said caused the collapse.

Army officials said most of the injuries were minor but two of the injured soldiers were flown to Fresno and two were taken by ambulance to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton.

Soldiers with minor injuries were treated at the fort.

"Every soldier that's out there, we're all trained in basic aid. So any soldier inside or military member, those folks were immediately rendering aid and helping out," said Fort Hunter Liggett spokeswoman Amy Phillips.

The collapse occurred during a training exercise involving 8,000 Army Reserve, Army National Guard and Canadian troops, Phillips said.

Fort Hunter Liggett is about 170 miles south of San Francisco. The sprawling base is the largest U.S. Army Reserve Command post.
