21-Year-Old Man Dies In Crash After His Car Drifts Into Oncoming Traffic In Livermore

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) - A 21-year-old Modesto man died Saturday morning in Livermore after his car drifted into the opposing lane of traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to the collision at 8:40 a.m. on Altamont Pass Road west of Goecken Road.

CHP said the man, driving a 2007 Volkswagon Jetta, was traveling eastbound on Altamont Pass Road when his vehicle drifted across the double yellow lines into the westbound lane.

The driver of a Volvo truck traveling in the westbound lane saw the Jetta and applied his brakes, but the Jetta hit the Volvo head-on, CHP said.

The driver of the Jetta was partially ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers said he was traveling at around 30 to 35 miles per hour and they do not yet know why his vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic.

The driver of the Volvo truck, a 37-year-old Fremont man, sustained pain to his back from the collision. CHP said an estimated 20 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from his vehicle as a result of the crash.

Hazmat teams cleaned the gasoline at the scene, officers said.

The Alameda County Coroner's office said they cannot yet release the Modesto man's name.
