2016 Recreational Dungeness Crab Season To Open Saturday

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS / AP) -- California residents hoping to catch and eat their own Dungeness crab this season can rejoice as the state has set a date for recreational crab season to open.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has declared Nov. 5 the beginning of Dungeness crab season. Commercial crabbing season is expected to open Nov. 15.

Last year, the Dungeness crab season was delayed for months by elevated levels of domoic acid, meaning local crab stayed off many Thanksgiving tables.

Domoic acid levels have lowered to acceptable health levels, though the California Department of Health has issued a warning against eating the internal organs of crab caught north of Point Reyes.
