Yolo County Food Bank Serving Meals To Hundreds Of Families In Need

WOODLAND (CBS13) - Their fridges would most likely be empty, but hundreds of families can prepare a holiday meal because of the Yolo County Food Bank.

"It's been fun giving food out to people," said one volunteer.

It's fun and rewarding for the 40 volunteers at Saturday's Christmas distribution in Woodland. The food bank was more than prepared to feed 700 families days just before Christmas.

"For these families, it's massive. Many of them are recently unemployed," Executive Director Kevin Sanchez said.

The food bank distributed turkeys, stuffing, rice, produce and sweets, enough to feed a family of four. Justin Rodegers and his family made the time to lend a helping hand.

"There's a big need in the community that people need food, and it's nice helping people that don't necessarily have it," he said.

Helping people is what the food bank has been doing for the past 40 years. With the help of big donors like Yocha Dehe of the Rumsey tribe, families in Yolo County have all been the beneficiaries. It's a gift that comes with a little more appreciation during the holidays.

Every month the food bank serves 20,000 people.
