Woodland firefighters battle grass fires along Highway 113

Firefighters were battling grass fires near the Interstate 5 and Highway 113 interchange in Woodland on Wednesday afternoon.

One fire appeared to have started behind the industrial area along North Pioneer Avenue.

Woodland Fire officials said the flames had spread to piles of railroad ties and continued moving along the east side of Highway 113. Wind and warm weather were complicating firefighting efforts.

Due to the fire, East Beamer Street was closed from Matmor Road to North Pioneer Avenue.

By 3 p.m., crews said they had stopped the forward progress of the fire. 

Another grass fire was burning north of E. Kentucky Avenue between N. Pioneer Avenue and County Road 101. Forward progress of the fire was stopped around 3:30 p.m.

County Road 102 was closed due to the fire. 

Woodland police said the cause of both fires remains unknown, but investigators are looking into the possibility they were intentionally set.
