West Hollywood Begin Installation Of Rainbow Crosswalks

WEST HOLLYWOOD (AP/CBS) — Rainbow hue crosswalks are being installed in West Hollywood.

City officials say the two crosswalks are a symbol celebrating the pride in the area's homosexual, bisexual and transgender residents.

The rainbow crosswalks are at Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards.

City officials say the intersection serves as the entrance to the city's PRIDE festival.

"The painting of rainbow crosswalks is a creative and unique gateway to LGBT activities in West Hollywood," said Steve Campbell, the City's Facilities & Field Services Manager.

The brightly hued walkways were first installed temporarily in June in honor of gay pride month. The West Hollywood City Council approved the permanent installations on Aug. 20.

The permanent installation is expected to be completed next week and is estimated to cost nearly $70,000.
