Thousands in Truckee, North Lake Tahoe region lost power due to Hawk Fire in Nevada
About 37,000 customers across the Truckee and North Lake Tahoe region were without power Saturday night after transmission lines were de-energized due to the Hawk Fire in Nevada.
The Truckee Donner Public Utility District, which provides energy to the greater Truckee region, said nearly 15,000 of its customers in the Truckee area are without power. The company said at 10:45 p.m. that power was beginning to be restored.
Liberty Utilities added that other areas like Glenshire, Loyalton and surrounding communities were also de-energized, affecting about 22,000 Liberty Utilities customers. By Sunday morning, Liberty Utilities' website showed no customers were without power.
NV Energy enacted an emergency de-energization of transmission lines because of the Hawk Fire. NV Energy feeds the Tahoe Donner District and Liberty Utilities transmission lines, causing the outage throughout the region.
Thousands of NV Energy customers in the area north of Verdi and Reno were also without power.
The Hawk Fire is burning north of Reno, in the area of Peavine Peak. Crews estimated the fire to be 10,500 acres as of Saturday night and that it was moving northeast, driven by wind.
There were an estimated 1,000 homes under evacuation orders late Saturday afternoon in Nevada, near the California border. Evacuations expanded Saturday night to some communities on the north side of Highway 395 near Silver Lake and in the Somersett community.
The Sierra County Sheriff's Office issued an evacuation warning along the California-Nevada border.
Highway 395 is closed from Parr Boulevard to Red Rock Road.
