Toy Drive For Military Kids Kicks Off

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- The rain and cold weather couldn't dampen one local woman's passion to launch the annual toy drive to benefit children whose parents are serving overseas during the holidays.

Debra Getz, appropriately dressed as one of Santa's helpers, is once again spearheading the effort to throw a special holiday party for military families through her organization, Never Forget Our Fallen.

"My son was killed in 2007 in Afghanistan," Getz said. "I want to give back to military families."

Every year since her son's death, she has dedicated her holiday to making others' a little bit brighter -- and has succeeded. The first year, she collected toys for 500 children; last year, she collected toys for 1,200.

This year, she needs more than 2,000 toys, a goal that can only be achieved if the community pitches in.

"If you see this and want to help a military family, that's what it's all about," Getz said.

A list of toy drop-off locations can be found on NeverForgetOurFallen.com.

The toy drive will continue through December 23.
