Thieves Steal Man's Power Chair In Sutter County

SUTTER COUNTY (CBS13) -- For Ross Erickson, each step is a small victory. Five years ago he suffered a stroke. Since then, mobility has been an issue.

"Came out Wednesday morning, no chair, no charger," he said.

Now Erickson is practically home bound. Thieves swiped his electric chair from the carport. The chair gave him the means to exercise at the community pool and to attend church on Sundays.

For Erickson, it's a tough loss.

"The ability to leave the park, and a semblance of independence, as it stands right now, I have to rely on all my friends," he said.

He reported the stolen chair, but so far it hasn't turned up. And even when he becomes eligible for a new scooter, he says it might not work out.

"I have to have a ramp built before I can ever get one. And with being on social security, I don't have the $1,200 to build one," he said.

Erickson is trying to stay positive and is asking for the public's help. The chair has a Craftsman for Christ sticker and a Duluth Trading Company postal carrier on the head rest.

"I think it's funny that somebody stole my chair when there was no foot pad there. They're going to have to be riding it like they're in the gynecologist's chair in the stirrups," he joked.

Even through the tough times Erickson still manages to keep his sense of humor and always has his faith.

"I pray that my chair is returned or that God opens a door for me," he said.

If you know where Erickson's scooter may be, please call police.

A few days later, Erickson was given a replacement chair.
