Suspected Quick-Change Con Artist Arrested By Roseville Police
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) - A man suspected of using an classic con to defraud local retailers has been arrested by Roseville Police.
Police arrested 59-year-old Roy X Garner of Citrus Heights on suspicion of burglary and theft.
Detectives say Garner had been stealing money using a "quick change" con, paying for small purchases with cash and then tricking cashiers into giving him more change than he was due.
Roseville police began investigating after getting a call earlier this month from retail loss prevention investigators saying a man had gone to several Northern California stores paying for small items with $50 and $100 bills.
The suspect would distract, interrupt and even hide bills as the clerks counted out the change. He would then claim the clerk didn't give him the right change.
In at least one case, a confused clerk gave him an additional $150 in change.
Garner has been booked into the Placer County Jail on $70,000 bail.
