Stockton Police Confirm Gun In Officer Shooting Was Used In Previous Homicide

STOCKTON (CBS13) – Stockton Police have confirmed a gun used to shoot one of their officers Wednesday night is the same gun used in a homicide earlier in the week.

On Wednesday, Officer Keith Berry was shot in the stomach during a struggle with 19-year-old Chomrean Meas. Berry's partner, Officer Tom Heslin, then shot and killed Meas.

Berry survived and is listed in guarded but stable condition.

The shooting took place on the same street where 42-year-old Stanley Jones had been shot and killed on Monday night.

Stockton investigators also say they have determined that Chomrean Meas was involved in Jones' death.

"Our investigators are working around the clock developing leads that happened this past week," Detective Joe Silva said Friday.

However, when Berry and Heslin approached Meas on Wednesay, they were unaware of his connection to the homicide.

"When they saw a group of people, they went up," Silva said. "They did not know the that suspect was in that group."

As police prepare for the what could be a busy weekend, a murder Thursday night brings the homicide rate to 14 — more than double this time last year.

"Our watch commanders are going to be evaluating what's going on to see if they need to pull in additional resources," Silva said.

Even though police say Meas was involved in Jones' murder, the say that doesn't mean he acted alone. They continue to look for additional suspects.
