Sheriff: South Sacramento Murder Suspect Turns Himself In; Mother Is Arrested For Accessory After The Crime

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Murder suspect Damien Horton turned himself in Wednesday afternoon to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

Horton is wanted for the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old in South Sacramento.

Detectives identified Horton earlier Wednesday. He has arrested in connection to the killing of a young woman in south Sacramento on Tuesday.

The incident happened along the 7800 block of Orchard Woods Circle.

Deputies responded just after 9 a.m. to investigate a reported shooting. A young woman who had been shot was found at the scene. She was taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

A perimeter was set up in the neighborhood and deputies searched through the day, but the suspect was never found.

Wednesday, detectives identified the suspect as 20-year-old Sacramento resident Damion Horton. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

Hours later, Horton turned himself in and was booked in the Sacramento County Jail for murder. He is being held without bail.

The Sheriff's department also confirmed that Horton is the father of the victim's child.

During the investigation, detectives found that friends and family of Horton were hiding him from police. Police arrested Horton's mother, 37-year-old Yolanda Smith of Sacramento, early Wednesday morning for being an accessory after the fact and violating her parole.

Smith is also in custody at the Sacramento County Jail and is not eligible for bail.

The name of the woman killed has not been released.
