Religious Groups Applaud Pope's New Book On Jesus
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Groups across the religious spectrum have applauded Pope Benedict XVI's new book, which explicitly states that Jews are not collectively responsible for Jesus' death.
Based on the limited excerpts released of the book "Jesus of Nazareth Part Two," the Pope says that a small group of high ranking Jewish religious leaders called for Jesus' crucifixion.
"The Pope says very clearly that it is not meant to refer to all Jews," said Priest Michael Kiernan of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.
Kiernan says the statement has been made before, but not so directly, and he believes most Catholics will share and embrace the sentiment.
"Most people will say, 'It's about time,'" Kiernan said.
The feeling was shared by Pastor Rick Cole of the Capital Christian Center, who believes misunderstanding has led to anti-Semitism.
Rabbi Reuven Taff says the Pope's new book will not only bring people together but also give Christians an understanding of the book they've always gone to for answers.
"This statement the Pope made in his book I think will hopefully help build the bridges between the Jewish and Catholic communities," Rabbi Taff said.
The book is due to be released on March 10.
