Relay Held To Raise Money For New Track

LODI (CBS13) - Rain or shine, that didn't stop hundreds of supporters and students from running for a good cause.

"It was interesting. Rain hitting in the face, no shoes, it was hard but it's worth it. Hopefully we will get the new track," said sprinter Joshua Tougas.

For 24 hours straight students moved their legs, raising money to build a new all-weather track in honor and remembrance of the schools former coach Don Womble.

"It feels great knowing that we could have a track by my senior year. If not, my little sisters will use it. It's not just for us, it's for the city," said Tougas.

It might not look like much but Lodi Highs current track has mud piled high and wet, slippery conditions.

Students say the conditions of the track have some safety concerns for the athletes.

"It can be painful after a while," said senior Robby Packhan.

For many, the benefits to the "Let's Get Ready to Womble - 24 Hour Relay" will be well worth it in the end if they get the new track.

"The all-weather tracks are faster and they are easier to run on. It is leaps and bounds between the dirt and the synthetic," said Packhan.

And with $400,000 already raised, the goal is just around the corner and no one is giving up.
