Recently Reinstated Sheriff's Chopper Helps Nab Suspect

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The Sacramento Police Department got an assist from the Sacramento County Sheriff's helicopter as the chopper got back in the air after being grounded for more than a year due to budget cuts.

Sacramento Police say they tried to pull over a car for a traffic violation at 55th Street and Florin Road on Tuesday.

That's when the front passenger jumped out of the car, took off and hid in an apartment complex.

The Sheriff's Department helicopter STAR was in the air and was able to find the suspect and keep him lit until officers could get him.

The helicopter had just started flying again on Sunday after the Sheriff's department got a federal grant allowing them to put their choppers back in service.

The parolee was taken into custody.

No one was hurt in the search.
