No Potty Parity: Gov. Jerry Brown Vetoes California Bills Requiring Diaper-Changing Stations In Men's Rooms

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Jerry Brown has vetoed a pair of bills that would have made diaper changing stations available in both men's and women's restrooms.

Brown announced Friday that he vetoed SB1350 and SB1358, saying many businesses already have taken steps to accommodate customers.

In his messages to Democratic Sens. Lois Wolk of Davis and Ricardo Lara of Bell Gardens, Brown said it would be prudent to leave the issue to the private sector rather than legislate it.

SB1350 would have required the California Buildings Standards Commission to adopt standards requiring changing stations in public restrooms, regardless of gender, when one is being built or renovated.

SB1358 would have required government buildings and private buildings open to the public to maintain at least one changing station accessible to both men and women.
