Mountain Lion Spotted Near Winters
WINTERS (CBS13) – Authorities are warning residents to avoid a section of Putah Creek where a mountain lion was spotted Friday morning.
The Winters Police Department says they received a report around 10 a.m. Friday that a mountain lion was lying behind Creekside Way and the walking path near Putah Creek. Police advise residents to be careful and avoid the area if they can.
Putah Creek runs through the south edge of the City of Winters.
Remember, if you do happen to come across a mountain lion, authorities advise you to face the animal, make a lot of noise, throw items and wave your arms to make yourself look bigger to hopefully scare the big cat away. Do not run away, Department of Fish and Wildlife officials say, as it could trigger a mountain lion's instinct to chase.
The last confirmed mountain lion attack in California happened back in July 2012 at the confluence of Shady Creek and the Yuba River in Nevada County, according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife. The 63-year-old man who encountered the cougar survived the attack.
