UPDATE: Modesto Bank Robbery Suspect Caught; Device Detonated

MODESTO (CBS13) - A 61-year-old man was detained in Modesto after allegedly robbing a Tri Counties Bank on Friday morning, and officers found what appeared to be a pipe bomb in the suspect's vehicle when they stopped him.

The Tri Counties Bank at Roselle and Floyd avenues was robbed at about 9:28 a.m. The bank is in the Raley's shopping center at 3020 Floyd Avenue.

The suspect reportedly entered the Raley's wearing a bike helmet and armed with a gun, went to the bank counter, demanded money at gunpoint, then left on a bicycle with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect then reportedly entered a a dark-colored van parked nearby but was stopped three blocks away from the bank after Modesto Police officers spotted him. Officers at that point noticed what appeared to be a pipe bomb in the minivan.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad was called in and the suspicious device was eventually detonated at about 2 p.m. Police found two guns and a bullet-proof vest in the minivan.

Streets in the area were closed and neighbors are being told to stay inside until the bomb squad cleared the scene. Belharbour from Rosetti Court to Rampart Street was closed.

The bomb squad sent in a robot to examine the device before it was eventually detonated.
