Medical Condition Causes Driver To Crash SUV Into School

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A medical condition caused a driver to crash an SUV into a south Sacramento school Thursday morning, California Highway Patrol says. It was all parents could talk about.

"I never seen that in a school happening," said a parent.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m., an SUV crashed into a brick wall of Pacific Elementary on 41st Street. Fortunately, school had not begun and their were very few students around campus.

"I hope the person is OK," parent Christina Ramirez said.

According to CHP, the person driving the SUV had some sort of medical condition which prompted the accident.

"Hopefully the person is OK. We're humans, we're sick sometimes. It's just so sad to see the school destroyed like this. We'll get it fixed soon," said another parent.

Before school started, Pacific Elementary officials quickly put up cones and caution tape to keep parents and students away.

"There is some minor structural damage to one small part of the school," said Sacramento Unified School District Chief Communications Officer Gabe Ross.

Ross says the damage is to the multipurpose room. The entrance is closed off because dry wall behind the brick wall was falling, making it unsafe for anybody to be near.

"We have no reason to believe that area is, really, is even structurally unsafe to walk under. However, we're going to take every precaution and make sure that people go around it just to be safe," said Ross.

The damage is expected to be fixed in a few days, and is estimated to be around $15,000. No other injuries were reported.
