JFK Assassin's Original Coffin Put Up For Auction

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The modest wooden coffin presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was originally buried in is up for sale to the higest bidder.

The coffin, exhumed in 1981 in an attempt to put to rest theories Oswald really wasn't in it, is being auctioned by mortuary owner Allen Baumgardner of Fort Worth, Texas.

President John F. Kennedy's killer was reburied in a replacement coffin because the original suffered water damage during its 17 years in the ground.

Baumgardner said Wednesday he has held onto the original since the day it was dug up.

Nate D. Sanders Auctions of Santa Monica, which is handling the sale, believes it could fetch as much as $100,000.

The online auction closes Dec. 16.
