Inmate Stabbed To Death In Northern California State Prison
SUSANVILLE, Calif. (AP) — An inmate at a Northern California state prison has been stabbed to death by another inmate who used a handmade weapon.
The state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says 53-year-old Douglas Maynard succumbed to his injuries after being attacked at High Desert State Prison in Susanville Saturday.
Investigators identified 39-year-old Robert Stockton as a suspect in the attack, which occurred on a recreation yard. He was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder and use of a firearm.
Maynard was also serving a life sentence. Officials said he was initially serving time for first-degree burglary, but while in prison he was convicted of assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon and several other charges.
The prison on Lassen County houses about 3,500 minimum-, medium- and maximum-custody inmates.
