Fugitive Sex Offender With Ties To Sacramento Arrested After Years On The Run

(CBS13) – A fugitive sex offender with ties to Sacramento has been arrested after ten years on the run.

In 2002, Steven Dyer was accused of molesting two children in Arizona but was released on bond and fled before his trial.

The U.S. Marshal Service in Sacramento has been helping to track him down because Dyer has family in Northern California.

He's also believed to have built playgrounds in the region for a number of years.

US Marshals say they learned recently that Dyer was traveling under an assumed identity.

"We were able to trace his movements from Canada to Central America to south America and then yesterday we received very good information that he was in Venezuela and purchased an airline ticket to go back to Canada," said US Marshal David Gonzales.

Dyer was arrested at an airport in Canada on Wednesday. Marshals say they're looking into whether friends or family may have helped him hide from the law.

Dyer was convicted of the child molest charges in absentia. He faces up to 169 years behind bars.
