Florin High Teens Accused Of Attacking Principal Sentenced

ELK GROVE (CBS13) — Nearly three months after a video captured national headlines, three teens have admitted to and been sentenced for the assault of their principal.

A 13-year-old and two 15-year-olds were arrested in connection with the October attack at Florin High School. Principal Don Ross was trying to break up a fight in the school's cafeteria when the group slammed him to the ground.

Two of the students pleaded guilty to felony assault while another admitted to misdemeanor assault and making criminal threats. All three are now wards of the juvenile court and being electronically monitored while they serve time at a youth detention facility.

Shortly after the incident, Ross told CBS13 he was sore from the attack, but energized.

Cellphone video of the incident made headlines across the country and prompted the Elk Grove Unified School District to increase law enforcement presence on campus while relaunching its anti-bullying campaign and revamping its parental notification system.

District officials call them important steps laid out by Ross to help everyone heal and make sure the mistakes of the past aren't repeated.

"He's in good spirits and he's definitely a trooper when it comes to getting back into the seat and make sure his students are safe and make sure the staff is safe," said district spokeswoman Xanthi Pinkerton.

The school district would not say if any of the students were suspended or expelled. A future hearing will determine the amount of restitution the teens must pay.
