Father And Son Help Victims In Highway 113 Collision

ROBBINS (CBS13) - A father and son jumped into action after several vehicles collided on Highway 113.

The crash shutdown both directions of Highway 113 near the town of Robbins in Sutter County.

Two big rigs, two pickups, a car and even a boat were all part of the domino effect that ended in this massive crash on Highway 113.

"The trailer coming toward us, and my dad telling me to hold on because we were going to go off the road if it started coming any closer," said Austin Scheiber.

Austin was spared as the crash stopped short of his car.

But the 16-year-old didn't stop when he saw that people needed help.

"There's a guy hunched over in the water, so we pulled him out and then the driver of the semi gets out and we help him out and pull him onto shore," said Scheiber.

But try as he might, he couldn't get to all five victims.

"There was another person in the white dodge down there, wanted to make sure he was ok. We couldn't help him, he was trapped inside," said Scheiber.

Rescue crews were eventually able to free all of the victims. Three were transported by air to local hospitals while two others had minor injuries.

"Everything from complaint of pain to major abdominal issues," said Officer Jody Beck, CHP.

CHP and Caltrans had other issues, like the white powdery substance spread across the roadway and even on cars.

It turned out to be sun block for crops that was being carried by one of the pickup trucks involved in the crash.

The powder, combined with the complexity of the crash would keep the roadway shut down for most of the day.

'It was a little scary but I'm glad it's over and everybody made it out alive," said one woman stuck in the traffic.

It was in part thanks to a teenager turned hero for a day.

"I wasn't really thinking, just acting and getting it done. I had no time to actually think, just went and started getting people out," said Scheiber.

CHP says they're investigating if the driver of the big rig that started the crash failed to brake or if his brakes didn't work.
