Davis City Council Votes Against Tax On Sugary Drinks
DAVIS (CBS13) — Davis city leaders have voted against placing an initiative for a soda tax on the June ballot.
However, the issue could come back up for further discussion if a draft for the ballot is formed and presented to the council and a suggestion is made on what the tax money would be used for.
Utilities, parcel and hotel taxes are also being considered to improve parks, pools, roads and bike paths.
"All over America I think we're not paying attention to that infrastructure," said resident Manuel Martinez. "The concrete is decaying and the integrity has been compromised."
Jose Granda with the taxpayers association in Davis says the city needs to tighten its belt if it needs more money.
"Stop treating the Davis taxpayers as an ATM machine," he said. "They come to us, and say save us, we work for our families, for our kids, not for the city and I think it's time they think about what they are doing."
