Cyclist Accused Of Smashing Car Window During Critical Mass Protest Ride In San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco Police say they have arrested a man who they say is seen in a video smashing a driver's window with a bicycle lock during a protest bike ride last month.

Police spokeswoman Grace Gatpandan says 39-year-old Ian Hespelt of San Francisco was arrested Saturday.

Gatpandan says officers arrested Hespelt after noticing he matched the description of the man in the video seen slamming his bike against a car and swinging a bike lock at the car window.

The incident Aug. 28 happened during the monthly Critical Mass ride.

Gatpandan says Hespelt was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism, false imprisonment, and maliciously and willfully throwing a substance at a vehicle, all felonies. He was also booked on a misdemeanor charge of inciting a riot.

It was not immediately known if Hespelt is being represented by an attorney.
