City Council Unanimously Passes Sacramento Railyards Plans

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The Sacramento city council voted unanimously to pass the long-awaited Sacramento railyards development plans.

It is a mega project. The historic Sacramento railyards - first built for a bustling 19th-century railroad, that then sat dormant with toxic cleanups and foreclosures, turning into 21st-century eyesore - is now back on track.

The massive dirt lot will be turned into up to 10,000 homes. Its old central shops will be turned into retail stores.

An eleventh-hour negotiation with the Sacramento City Unified School District led developers to agree to set aside land and spend millions to build a new school.
Construction will be triggered by the 250th school-aged child that moves into the development.

Noise and parking surrounding a proposed MLS stadium were two issues council focused on, allowing 37 events a year at the proposed stadium site and allowing for a review to clawback the number of parking lots that will initially sit on the railyards footprint.
