SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – California representatives are asking President-elect Donald Trump to denounce comments made by a campaign surrogate during a Fox News appearance.
Carl Higbie, speaking on "The Kelly File" on Wednesday, said Japanese internment camps during World War II set a precedent for Trump's Muslim registry system plan.
"We've done it based on race, we've done it based on religion, we've done it based on region," Higbe said. "We've done it with Iran back, back a while ago. We did it during World War II with [the] Japanese."
Kelly, for her part, immediately rebuked Higbie's comment.
Thursday, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Riverside) called on Trump to immediately denounce Higbie's comments.
"I am horrified that people connected to the incoming Administration are using my family's experience as a precedent for what President-elect Trump could do," Takano said.
Takano's family was interned during World War II.
Rep. Doris Matsui, who herself was born in an internment camp, also released a statement condemning the remarks.
