California Bill Would Make Cheerleading A Sport
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A proposed bill could move cheerleading from a sideshow to a sport in California high schools.
The move comes as Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez is writing a bill to make the change.
At Sacramento's El Camino High School, Principal Shelley Friery says it's time.
The California Interscholastic Federation oversees high school sports, and has never formally considered adding cheerleading as a sport.
If passed, the law would create new safety guidelines for cheerleader training and could lead to changes in athletic department funding.
The CIF executive committee will meet later this month to decide whether to support the cheerleading bill.
