Bill Allowing Driver's Licenses For Undocumented Immigrants Heading To Governor

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Undocumented immigrants may soon be able to get a driver's license in California after legislators passed a bill on its way to the governor's desk.

Several lawmakers have said Gov. Jerry Brown has signaled his support for the bill, which would grant up to 1.4 million new licenses. However, the governor's office declined to comment.

An artist's rendition of what the license could look like shows it's not much different from an actual California driver's license, except it will be for driving privileges only.

The back of the license would read "This card is not acceptable for federal purposes. It is acceptable for driving privileges only. It does not establish eligibility for employment, voter registration, or public benefits."

Supporters say it will make the road safer.

"That they have a legal way to apply and take the driving exam, be insured, and be properly license, and be knowledgeable on California laws—I think that's in everybody's interest," said Assemblyman Luis Alejo.

But those against the bill say driving is a privilege that shouldn't be given to those who broke the law coming here, and they say it forces business owners to choose between breaking state or federal law.

"If they comply with it, they are in violation of federal law. If they don't comply with it, they are subject to civil lawsuits and unlimited damages for discrimination," said Assemblyman Tim Donnelly.
