To some, eating chocolate means nibbling on the occasional Hershey's kiss or chip-studded cookie. But true aficionados know that a world of mouthwatering, mood-altering treats exist beyond the counters of the local dime store. Sacramento is home to some of the finest chocolate confections available, and these small businesses are among the best of the best.

Andy's Candy Apothecary
1012 9th St.
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 905-4115

If chocolate is your drug of choice, you will love the goodies available at Andy's. The shop, which just opened in December 2013, offers a good selection of unique cacao treats in spite of the relatively small retail space. In addition to handmade candies and traditional American favorites, Andy's features sweets from around the world that are not readily available here.  Chocolate treats created by other Sacramento-area businesses are also featured, as are goodies such as toffee, hard candy and numerous creations of the gummy variety.

Kobasic's Candies
5324 Riverside Blvd.
Sacramento, CA 95822
(916) 448-3555

Ever since the first Kobasic family member began as a professional candy-maker in 1906, the name has been synonymous with mouth-watering homemade chocolates and caramels. This is not your mother's sampler box of Whitman's drugstore chocolates. The Sacramento confectioner is known for creating "kruffles," which are hand-dipped chocolate truffles filled with rich and creamy ganache. Kruffles come in many flavors including peppermint, cherry rocky road, maple pecan, orange, coconut and amaretto. Try dark chocolate candies filled with cranberry, mint or coffee, and enjoy milk chocolate treats with lemon, pineapple, coconut or Irish cream. Fruit fans will appreciate the chocolate-dipped apricots, cherries, blueberries and plums. Additional treats include chocolate-covered Oreos and chocolate bark.

Le Grand Confectionary
2580 Fair Oaks Blvd., Suite 12
Sacramento, CA 95825
(916) 485-8000

Le Grand has rightfully earned a place in the rarified world of upscale chocolatiers. The refined Sacramento shop offers small-batch artisan truffles in several sizes, including the 1.25-ounce grand truffle that is intended to be a full dessert. Truffle flavors include key lime, toffee almond, French vanilla, tiramisu, cherry cheesecake, amaretto, black forest and champagne. Grand and petite truffles, rich with cream, butter and the finest chocolate, are decorated by hand by Le Grand's chocolatiers. Elegantly presented boxes of one or two truffles are perfect as wedding favors, gifts or as special treats at events. Le Grand also offers elegant sugar-free and vegan goodies and the completely edible chocolate cornucopia is unique and sure to impress.

Capital Confections Chocolates & Gelato
2605 El Paseo Lane
Sacramento, CA 95821
(916) 973-0249

If you have ever desired a dark chocolate version of the Eiffel Tower, a treat-filled swan of white chocolate or lovebirds made of creamy milk chocolate, Capital Confections should be your prime destination. Other options for molded chocolate include anniversary hearts, baseball or football equipment for sports teams and corporate gifts of chocolate computers and the like. Traditional boxes of chocolates are anything but boring, and include luxurious vanilla or chocolate creams, caramels, toffees, nut candies and fudge melt-aways. Capital's hand-rolled truffles are wonderful, and the shop features sugar-free treats as well.
