On the second Saturday of every month, many of the streets in downtown and midtown Sacramento are filled with people, music, art and other entertainment. Beginning around 5:30 p.m., numerous art galleries, restaurants, shops and bars welcome the public in for special deals, performance art, free activities and events, but an equal amount of the action occurs as you walk outside from place to place.

Some streets are completely closed to automobile traffic, allowing space for a wide range of activities and performances. Live music of every type competes for your attention, from loud rock, hip-hop and dance bands playing on stages to blues guitar players, pop singers and classical musicians set up randomly on corners. Vendors sell an array of cool items including original artwork, ceramics, jewelry, clothing, antiques and collectibles; this is not a swap meet with packs of irregular socks, unlicensed plastic "Frozen" chair seats and dust-laden junk. There is a fun and positive community vibe to Second Saturday, and there are new things to experience each month.

While some galleries and businesses are further afield, most of the activity takes place in an area less than one square mile. The venues listed above are among those that normally have special Second Saturday happenings; Downtown Grid posts an updated a map of businesses that participate each month.
