Baggage Handlers At Oakland International Airport Charged With Drug Smuggling

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Federal authorities say three baggage handlers at Oakland International Airport are among 14 people charged as part of an alleged marijuana smuggling ring.

U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag said Monday the baggage handlers are accused of using their security badges to get through screening areas while carrying suitcases filled with marijuana. They would then hand off the luggage to passengers waiting to board planes who would transport them as carry-on items to cities throughout the country.

According to the complaint, the group was operating as early as July 2012.

The baggage handlers were identified as Kenneth Wayne Fleming of San Leandro, Keith Ramon Mayfield and Michael Herb Videau of Oakland.

Haag says the three men have been charged with conspiracy to distribute, and possess with intent to distribute, 100 kilograms or more of marijuana.
