UPDATE: Suspect In Galt Shootout Taken Into Custody
GALT (CBS13) – The suspect in an early morning shootout between a brother and sister at a Galt home has been taken into custody, according to police.
The suspect, Lonnie Ray Orman, was arrested just before 9:00 a.m. on Highway 50 near El Dorado Hills.
Police say Orman was in town from Oregon visiting his parents in Galt and went to his sister's house in the 900 block of Whitford Court around 6:30 Tuesday morning.
The family says Orman said he came to the home to check on the welfare of his niece. They believe he was suffering from delusions and that he believed his niece was being harmed.
When his brother-in-law refused to let Orman into the home, police say he started shooting through the front door with a handgun. One shot hit his brother-in-law in the shoulder.
Orman's sister then retrieved a gun and began firing back through the door telling police she feared Orman would enter the home.
Stray bullets from the shootout went through the door and two walls into a neighbor's house.
"The bullet Came through and the bullet is still in my house right now," said neighbor Marian. "I was smelling flowers from Valentine's Day and then the bullet came right in right where I was standing. I thought I was being targeted, but I wasn't."
Orman left the shooting scene in his vehicle. Detectives were able to use Orman's cellphone to locate him and alerted CHP and El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies that he was headed their way on Highway 50.
When he was arrested, it was discovered that Orman had been shot in the leg. Once he is medically cleared, he will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted homicide.
Orman's brother-in-law was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
Galt Police say there is absolutely no evidence that the victim's daughter was in any harm as Orman believed when he went to the home.
