Violent Night Leaves 6 Dead In Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A deadly day in Philadelphia.
Six people were killed in different parts of the city yesterday, starting when a knife wielding man went on a random stabbing spree.
Authorities say the triple stabbing left one person dead and two injured in Southwest Philadelphia. Police arrested a man who they believe was high on PCP when he stabbed three men, killing one.
Later, a double shooting in North Philadelphia left one person dead and another injured, according to authorities. It happened at about 6:25 p.m. at the the 2100 block of N. Van Pelt Street.
Authorities identified the victim who died as 21 year old Quadir Whitney. The motive appears to be an argument, according to police.
Police are investigating after they say a person died in Grays Ferry around 8 p.m. Police say officers arrived to the 2300 block of Morris Street and observed a male lying on his back with severe head injuries. Several feet away from the victim was a green-colored dirt bike.
The male was pronounced dead at 8:01 p.m. Responding officers were notified of a second male victim who was transported to a local hospital by private vehicle. Authorities say he was suffered from a gunshot wound to his thigh and two gunshot wounds to his buttocks.
He is listed in critical condition.
The victim who died has been identified by police as 21 year old Demetrius Pinckney.
In West Philadelphia, police say a person is dead following a shooting on the 1400 block of Vodges Street.
Officers located a male, unresponsive on the porch of a residence, suffering from a gunshot wound to his right armpit. Responding officers took the male to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced at 8:45 p.m. He has been identified as 22-year-old Trevor E. Bouknight. Authorities say the motive for the shooting is drug-related.
Another shooting around 8:30 p.m. on the 2400 block of North Hollywood Street in Strawberry Mansion left one person dead, according to authorities.
In East Falls, police say a person was found with multiple gunshot wounds at the 3100 block of Abbottsford Road. The male was pronounced dead at about 9:21 p.m., according to police.
Police Commissioner Richard Ross expressed frustration at the loss of life.
"People should be enjoying themselves instead of going out creating this carnage in the streets. Nonetheless, this is what we're dealing with, so we're going to work very hard to get to the bottom of all of them."
It was a warm day and it's going to warm this week, and Ross says they think about rising temps leading to increased crime, but he notes such violence happens on the coldest of days, too.
No arrests in any of the shootings. Ross says anyone with information needs to call the police to help them crack down on the violence and save lives.
