Vintage Baseball Enthusiasts Play At Navy Yard This Weekend
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Devotees of baseball the way it was played 150 years ago will gather at the Navy Yard this weekend.
Wool uniforms. Handlebar mustaches. Thick-handled bats and no gloves. It's base ball -- two words -- the way it was played in the 1860's.
Scott Alberts, president of the Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia, says the rules were a little different then.
"Pitching had to be underhanded. The pitcher is in a box 45 feet away from the plate. And that's why, the modern expression, 'We knocked the guy out of the box,' that's where that comes from. There's no infield fly rule. If a ball is hit into the infield and bounces foul, that's a fair ball."

Alberts' team will join a dozen others from the Mid Atlantic Vintage Baseball League in competing in a two-day free exhibition this Saturday and Sunday at the Navy Yard.
