Upper Darby School District Apologizes For KKK Skit
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- School officials from Upper Darby, Delaware County are apologizing for a photo circulating on the Internet of students wearing Ku Klux Klan uniforms in a classroom.
The photo may have popped up in your social media feeds. It shows three Upper Darby High School students posing for a shot while dressed in homemade KKK uniforms. It happened during the 2014-2015 school year.
Superintendent Richard Dunlap sent out a letter Friday night, expressing deep regret for a school project on history that went awry. He said the project was a skit designed to highlight atrocities of the KKK from the 1920's.
Dunlap went on to say the district is deeply sorry if anyone was offended and that the project was and example of poor judgment.
Teachers and administrators have been going through diversity training.
Dunlap asks for support while the district attempts to make this a teachable moment about cultural and racial understanding.
