Burritos aren't exactly the most sophisticated food, but there's something irresistible about having your protein and sides all wrapped up inside a warm tortilla. It doesn't hurt that they're almost always huge, and perhaps more importantly, cheap. From your standard beef or chicken to more creative options like goat or sweet potato, these are the top spots to fill your belly with a hefty burrito in Philadelphia.

Typically just called "Cantina" by regulars, this South Philly spot serves massive burritos, California-style. Flour tortillas are stuffed with black beans, rice, onions, cilantro and your choice of chicken, chorizo, pork carnitas, steak, goat, shrimp, mahi mahi, vegan beef, vegetables or black beans. While pretty much all of them come highly recommended, the goat is a standout favorite. Add jalapenos or pico de gallo for 50 cents or sour cream, cheese or guac for an extra dollar.

Offering food that's inspired by Mexico's open-air markets and roadside stops, El Rey has more of a homey, taqueria/diner feel than its sister restaurant from Stephen Starr, El Vez. Burritos are available on both the brunch and lunch menus. The breakfast burrito features scrambled eggs with your choice of bacon, black beans or chorizo along with rice, avocado and Chihuahua cheese. Or, for something more unique than options like chicken or beef, try the lamb burrito.

Stephen Starr takes on classic Mexican dishes with added flair at this Midtown Village spot. In addition to options such as pibil pork tacos, grilled street corn and the must-have guacamole, the burritos are always a lunchtime favorite. Choose from shredded beef, portabello mushroom and chicken suizo, or go during brunch to enjoy a burrito with scrambled eggs, spicy chorizo, potatoes, bacon and cheese.

Tom McCusker was originally famous for selling West Coast-style tacos out of his brightly colored truck. Since then, he's opened a University City restaurant offering tacos, burritos and a few other casual dining favorites to nearby college students (and everyone else). The burritos are packed with rice, beans, guacamole, salsa, cheese, sour cream and your choice of chicken, pork, beef, sweet potato or extra rice and beans. If you're looking for something filling to start your day, the breakfast burrito is another Honest Tom favorite.

This Latin American BYOB is a bit of a hidden gem in Northern Liberties. With Christmas lights, plants and even a thatch covering over one of the tables, the unique atmosphere makes you feel like you're sitting outside on a deck instead of inside a dim restaurant. The burritos are large, tasty and definitely cheap. You can get them with a variety of fillings ranging from steak to fish and even vegetarian chorizo. If you like it hot, ask for the Diablo sauce.

Located in the Italian Market, this casual Mexican BYOB is known for its low prices and huge portions. The burritos are roughly the size of your head, and there are plenty of options to choose from. Steak, chorizo, shrimp, carnitas, vegetarian – this spot has it all. A consistent favorite is the al pastor burrito, made with tender roasted pork and fresh pineapple.
