Third Person Dies In City's Latest Heat Wave
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A third person has died in the heat wave that has slammed into the Philadelphia Region this weekend.
The Health Department confirmed Sunday that a 59-year-old man from North Philadelphia is the latest victim of the extremely hot weather.
Officials said the unidentified man had suffered from diabetes and congestive heart failure.
On Saturday, authorities said a 67-year-old woman from Brewerytown and an 82-year-old woman from Port Richmond had died from the effects of the heat. Both women also had preexisting medical conditions.
The latest fatality brings the number to seven heat-related deaths in the city this summer.
With the excessive heat warning extended through Sunday night, city officials are concerned about the effects of the hot weather on the elderly and on the homeless, especially those with chronic lung and heart issues. They are asking residents to check on elderly neighbors to make sure they have fans or air conditioners.
