Some Voorhees Residents Fed Up With Speeding
By Cleve Bryan
VOORHEES, NJ (CBS) -- Speeders have a Voorhees neighborhood fed up and pleading for help.
Families who live along busy White Horse Road are supposed to be protected by a 25 mph speed limit between Lucas Lane and the White Horse Pike, but a traffic study this year found the average driver goes 17 mph above the limit.
"It's a fact of life that we have to live with people doing 42 miles per hour, 50 miles per hour, it's an everyday occurrence," says Larry O'Donnell.
O'Donnell has been upset about speeding since he moved to White Horse Rd about 15 years ago but now those concerns have escalated since he has a six-year-old daughter who takes the school bus.
"I see these buses getting passed every morning, and the out of control speeding. I've had enough and my neighbors have all had enough," says O'Donnell.
Four houses down the road Alan Husted shares the same safety concerns because he has grandchildren who also take the school bus.
"Somebody or one of the kids are going to get hurt and one of these times we're going to have a serious accident," says Husted.
Voorhees Police Chief Louis Bordi says the department is well aware of the concerns along the White Horse Rd.
When it's available an electronic caution sign is placed there and patrols have been advised to do speed enforcement.
Neighbors want more brightly lit and permanent signs and they wonder if there are other options to explore.
"Put a camera on it. They have them on the traffic lights when you blow through a red light, have it set for a speed limit," says Scott Croall who lives along White Horse Road.
O'Donnell says drivers need to be more responsible.
"Would you want this happening in front of your house? I don't think so," says O'Donnell.
