Philadelphia Honors LGBT History Month With A Rainbow Flag
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mayor Nutter joined members of the city's gay and lesbian community in a flag raising on Wednesday: a rainbow flag, now flying at City Hall in honor of LGBT History Month.
The Philadelphia Voice of Pride Choir was on hand for what was said to be the first time that the rainbow flag was raise at any municipal building in Philadelphia.
Mayor Michael Nutter said that in the wake of recent suicides of gay men after being harassed, the flag-raising sends an important message:
"We will not tolerate this kind of behavior here in Philadelphia under any set of circumstances."
Malcolm Lazin, founder of the Equality Forum, says gays are the only minority whose history is not taught in school:
"No wonder we have seen the events that we have witnessed in terms of young people taking their lives."
The rainbow flag is flying on the north side of City Hall.
