Longtime Local Media Personality Sally Starr Dies At 90

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - One of Philadelphia's iconic TV show hosts is gone. Sally Starr passed away Sunday. She turned 90 on Saturday.
"Our Gal Sal" started out in country music, but most of us knew Sally Starr for her daily "Popeye Theatre" which aired for a quarter century on Channel 6, ending in 1971.
Her reputation kept her going for decades after that, mostly through public appearances. Sally had her share of private tragedies, but never allowed them to affect her public personae. She spoke about that to KYW Newsradio last year:
"I let my troubles stay outside the studio door. They know everything about me, my fans do 'cause I don't pull any punches," she said.
But it's her smile…her warmth…that we'll remember. Like the way she'd say goodbye at the end of a show.
"I love ya lots. Love, luck and lollipops," Sally would say. And she got that love back - big time.
