It's 'Food Network' Spotlight Night For Hopeful Montco Teen
By Steve Tawa
LOWER GWYNEDD, Pa. (CBS) -- A local teenager will be featured tonight on the Food Network cable channel as he competes in a "Teen Invasion" episode of the series, "Chopped."
Fifteen-year-old Mikey Robins of Lower Gwynedd and three other teens each get a chance to charge into the kitchen to create an appetizer, an entrée, and a dessert.
"And each round, you're given a basket of four ingredients," Robins explains. "They're mystery ingredients that are totally non-related to each other."
Their challenge is to make, for example, tuna and breakfast cereal into a cohesive plate or, as Robins describes it, "basically the dish of your life that can save your life or send you home."
The Germantown Academy student has been cooking since he was a child because his parents once ran a cooking school and they often entertain at home.
Mikey says his casting call interview and screen test set the stage for his appearance.
"They said I was the longest interview they ever had on the show," he tells KYW Newsradio.
He's sworn to secrecy about the outcome, but not about his ambitions.
"Being on the Food Network and seeing all of the cameras has ignited the flame that someday I definitely want to have my own cooking or TV show," he says.
His episode airs tonight at 10pm on the Food Network.
