Hear Philly: The Shore Thing - Fun At The Lighthouse, Movies On The Beach And Themed Luncheons For Kids

By Andrew Kramer

CAPE MAY, N.J. (CBS) - July in Cape May marks the start of many activities that will continue into August.

Susan Krysiak with the Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts says one of them takes place at a well-known Cape May landmark:

"Family Fun Day Craft Shows at the Cape May Lighthouse are events that we hold on Wednesdays throughout the summertime, beginning in July."

Krysiak says it's something that kids and families enjoy for several reasons:

"It's free, for one. They can come out to the Cape May Lighthouse and there's activities, crafts, games, there's things for moms and dads to buy and look around and enjoy. There's even things like limbo and stuff like that -- tons of fun."

Family Fun Days at the Lighthouse begin at 9 a.m. and run through mid-August.

If you're looking to add a little music to the mix, Mayor of the City of Cape May Dr. Edward Mahaney says they host another weekly event you'd be interested in:

"We do run a summer concert series on eight Mondays where we bring in national performing arts and we offer that in our Convention Hall.

He says they draw plenty of big names:

"Our showcase lineup starts with The Hit Men, Melissa Manchester, Deana Martin, Rubylee Productions presents Broadway at the Beach, The Grass Roots, Poperazzi, Rita Cooudge and completes with the Kingston Trio."

The Cape May Summer Concert Series begins at 8 p.m. each Monday and runs until August 18th.

We've already got crafts, games and music covered, how about throwing some movies in there as well?

"The City of Cape May is partnering with the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May to offer movies on the beach, for free," explains Mahaney. "The movies include such favorites as E.T., The Goonies, Jaws, Ghostbusters, Babe.

He says an event like this offers a unique experience:

"Sometimes the attendance gets up as high as 1,500, sitting under a star-struck night with a cool breeze coming off the ocean on our clean beaches, right by Convention Hall."

The movies on the beach take place between July 10th and August 28th.

And, ok, we'll include some food events too...

"We host some really great lunches for kids in the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate," explains Krysiak.

She says kids and their families can come and enjoy everything the Princesses & Pirates Luncheon have to offer:

"There's pirate games, there's pirate dress up, there's princess games and princess stories and princess dress up, and then we offer a luncheon geared to children in a little bit of a tea party atmosphere, so kids always love this, it's really fun."

Krysiak adds the young ones will also enjoy another weekly event they host:

"Teddy Bear Tea Parties are a bring-your-own bear kind of event. You can bring a bear, you can bring a doll, whatever kind of friend you'd like to bring with you, and sit it right next to you at the table and enjoy and enjoy a nice, little afternoon tea."

Both events take place weekly all throughout July and August.

And that's The Shore Thing for this month.
