Cynophobia
By Nan Talleno
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Cynophobia, also known as the fear of dogs, is a relatively common animal phobia. Unfortunately, many times it may be unfairly rooted on just an observational experience.
But it can also stem from childhood or other early influences. Symptoms of this fear may include a panic attack, trembling, dry mouth, nauseousness or sweating.
According to VetInfo.com, research has revealed that females may be more likely to suffer from this type of irrational fear. Avoidance of dogs, however, is not recommended, as it only tends to exacerbate and prolong the problem. There are many types of therapy that prove to resolve this problem. Desensitizing and Exposure therapy have shown effective results.
Fortunately, there are many success stories of people conquering this fear as many who once suffered from this phobia have actually decided to later adopt a dog.
