Convention Focuses On Role Of Immigrants In Neighborhoods, Economy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Some 350 representatives from cities and economic groups in 10 states are converging on Philadelphia for the Welcoming Economies Global Network meeting in the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

The convention runs Thursday and Friday and will highlight efforts to embrace immigrants and integrate them into the local and regional economy.

Steve Tobocman, is from Detroit and a co-chair and founder of the forum. He says groups from 20 communities are gathering for the event.

"Chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, independent nonprofits like the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians and Global Detroit, city government and others who lead initiatives in their own local communities on how to work with immigrants to rebuild neighborhoods, to create economic growth, create new businesses, fill unmet talent positions in the private sector."

Tobocman says immigrants continue to play an important role in Philadelphia's rebirth.
