Committee Questions Privatization Of PA Lottery

By Tony Romeo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Members of a state Senate committee will have their chance to question Corbett administration officials about their plan to privatize the management of the Pennsylvania Lottery.

Monday morning's hearing by the Senate Finance Committee comes fresh off Friday evening's announcement that the Corbett administration intends to award a 20-year contract to run the Lottery to a British firm called Camelot Global Services.

While Senate Democrats reacted with outrage that the announcement would come before Monday's hearing, the administration released a statement Friday night saying that it's "notice of award" of the contract is non-binding and would allow the administration to disclose contractual and procurement details of the agreement at the hearing.

Legislative Democrats have protested that lawmakers have been shut out of the process and the state treasurer has indicated he may withhold payments to Camelot if he deems necessary.
