PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Comic book geeks and beer fanatics take over the town today with the opening of Philly Beer Week and Comic Con. While these are separate festivals, there is a movement afoot to have them officially join forces in 2014.
This is the second year in a row that these two celebrations are opening on the same weekend and now organizers on both sides are rubbing their chins, wondering about the possibilities.
"It would be a lot of fun," says Philly Beer Week Executive Director Don Russell, who has his own alter ego -- a local beer superhero known as Joe Sixpack. "I think we could really come up with some really killer beer-drinking event with comic book fans."
More than 200 area bars and restaurants are offering all kinds events over the next 10 days.
And it turns out that some of them are ahead of the curve.
At Prohibition Tap Room in Center City, General Manager Jon has partnered with Bella Vista Distributors to offer rare and extreme brews while urging patrons to channel their inner superheroes or villains.
"People can dress up in their own costumes they make themselves, their own name, slogan, pose and persona and we'll actually put them onstage American Idol style and the winner will get an awesome really rare beer prize pack."
And in Chestnut Hill, the brewers at Iron Hill have concocted two new IPA's named Lex Luthor and Kryptonite. Look for much more next year.
