Yet More Cuts At Motorola

Motorola is cutting another 4,000 jobs – this time from its networks sector, which provides broadband and wireless communications products and systems.

The electronics giant has handed out 22,000 pink slips since December.

Motorola's Networks Sector president Edward Breen says the cuts are part of the company's moves to cut costs to stay competitive.

The company's announcement says it expects to make the layoffs by the end of the second quarter.

Motorola says the specific timing of actions will depend upon legal or regulatory requirements in various countries.

"Motorola is making tough but deliberate and strategic business decisions in order to remain competitive in the slowing economy," Edward D. Breen, president of Motorola's Networks Sector, said in a statement.

"Unfortunately, reductions have been necessary for us to improve financial performance, and this is something that we will have to continually evaluate as we monitor market and economic conditions,'" Breen said.

Earlier this month, Motorola cut 7,000 jobs in its cellular phone division, increasing to 12,000 the number it has eliminated in the operation since December.

Last month, Motorola also announced it was eliminating 4,000 jobs from its semiconductor business.

The slowdown of the nation's economy has worsened troubles that already were evident in the second half of last year.

Motorola had 147,000 employees when the company, intent on cutting costs as its sales and profits started to fall, began handing out pink slips in December.
